One room, one shelf, a boat schedule
BLOCK ISLAND HEALTH SERVICES, INC keeps a small retail counter on Block Island, RI — a year-round community of about a thousand people, and a great many more between June and September.
A counter that narrowed down
Island retail is its own kind of arithmetic. Everything on the shelf crossed water to get here, so you learn quickly to stock the few things people actually come back for, and to keep enough of them for the stretch of winter when the boat does not always run.
We started as a general wellness counter — teas, salts, a rack of the usual bottles — and slowly narrowed down. GlycoWell is what stayed. Today it is the only product we sell, which means we can answer any question about it without checking a binder, and we never have to guess what is in stock.
The rest of the business is unglamorous and we like it that way: packing boxes at the counter, walking parcels down for the ferry, and replying to email between customers. If you write to us, a person on this island reads it.
Two very different halves
Our posted hours are Mon-Sat, 9am-4pm ET all year, but what happens inside them changes completely between the season and the off-season. It is worth knowing which one you are ordering in.
June to September
The population multiplies, boats run often, and the door does not stop. Dispatch is quick because there is nearly always another crossing later the same day, and someone is behind the counter every hour we are open.
Phones are busier, so email is usually the faster way to reach us in high summer. We still answer everything the same day.
October to May
Crossings thin out and the weather starts making decisions for us. We may close a little early when the last boat has gone, so call ahead if you are travelling over specially, and expect a day or two more on mainland delivery.
This is also the half of the year when we do the unglamorous work: stock counts, reorders, and finally answering the emails we saved up in August.
Four habits we have not managed to break
Stock one thing well
A single product means a single set of answers, and no upsell script under the counter.
Say what it is
A dietary supplement is a dietary supplement. We describe it plainly and leave the claims alone.
Ship on the boat
Parcels go out on ferry days. When weather stops the boat, we email you rather than stay quiet.
Take it back
180 days to return anything, opened or not. Email us and we will start it.
The schedule is the boss here
Nobody on this island plans a day without checking it, and that includes us. Everything on the shipping side of this shop is arranged around which crossings are running.
